ECONOMY
Matteo Renzi announced a 14 billion dollar package of tax cuts to stimulate Italy's economy. overall Italy's economy has contracted by 1.8% in 2013 and the unemployment irate is above 12 %. Many blame the failure of Italian politicians for this economic struggle. There is a high public debt, lack of competitiveness, and administrative inefficiency. Italy is currently torn as Union leaders want the tax cuts to go to workers, and businesses want the tax cuts to be given to businesses. The economy is now in it's longest recession with high rates of women and youth unemployment.
POLITICS
Italy has had more governments than any other big European power since world war II. Only one government has lasted the whole 5 year term, since 1945. Many if the common people are sick and tired of the government. Currently, the lower house of parliament past an electoral overhaul. Italy's highest court has ruled that many of the country's voting laws are unconstitutional. Mr. Renzi wants to amend the constitution and turn the senate into a regional assembly. Matteo Renzi is the third straight premier to come to office without being elected. The last premier was Berlusconi who was convicted of tax fraud.
